Damian Jurt | Kunsthaus CentrePasquArt | 2016 | art work by Tina Schulz

(e) Damian Jurt is Associate Curator at the Kunsthaus Pasquart in Biel, Switzerland. This managerial function involved curating exhibitions, coordinating large-scale exhibitions, publishing monographs, collections management, and realizing education programmes for adults. The profile was rounded out by international networking and fund-raising.

Jurt belongs to a generation that considers the role of the curator to be broad and varied. His curatorial approach consists in researching and proposing architectural, digital, and institutional situations in which the multidisciplinary dimension of socio-critical art can intervene. This concept flows into exhibitions, texts and lectures partly through cooperative projects, partly in the Internet, and also within the institutional context. He has curated exhibitions of works by artists such as Kemang Wa Lehulere, Aernout Mik, Tina Schulz, Donatella Bernardi, Michael Sailstorfer, Aram Bartholl, Delphine Reist, Roland Roos or Christian Falsnaes.

Since 2008 he has been a research assistent at the Art Institute of the Basel Academy of Art and Design. As the artistic director of the City Gallery (Loge) in Bern in 2009, Jurt focused on contextual exhibition formats that show how social and political tensions can be interpreted within the arts. Artists such as Donatella Bernardi, Adrien Tiritaux or Delphine Reist focused on context specific projects. Jurt realised the publication Wie wichtig ist der Kick für dich?, Boabooks, for which Philippe Pirotte, Barnaby Drabble and Sibylle Omlin interviewed the artists and others involved in the exhibition series in the City Gallery (Loge). In 2010 he participated in the symposium Institution as Medium. Curating as Instiutional Critique? at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum Kassel and curated the exhibition Between Spaces at the Museum of Art Lucerne, which presented works by Lukas Hoffmann and Peter Stobbe. He acted in 2011 as curator at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and participated in conferences at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Art and at the Nida Art Colony in Nida, Lithuania. Since 2012, various exhibitions, publications and workshops based on the curatorial research project www.collective-view.ch were realized in cooperation with the House of Electronic Arts Basel, the symposium We, the Public, organised by SARN (Swiss Artistic Research Network), or the publishing house Scheidegger & Spiess. From 2012 to 2014, as a member of staff at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Basel, FHNW, he worked with Professor Kirsten M. Langkilde for the exhibition platform Curating the Campus.

He studied at the Geneva University of Art and Design Arts (Diplôme HEA en arts visuels) and at the School of Visual Arts in New York. In 2009 he completed the Postgraduate Programme in Curating at the Zurich University of the Arts (MAS in Curating). From 2010 to 2012 he studied at the Research-Based Master Programme, CCC – Critical Curatorial Cybermedia, Geneva University of Art and Design (M.A. in Critical Curatorial Cybermedia Studies).
